The inspiration: 19th-century romanticism and its poetry
At the beginning of the 19th century, a new sensibility emerged in Europe that emphasised the expression of feelings and passions. It was the result of political and social upheavals and had a primarily political background. It questioned people's deep desires in the face of authoritarian dynasties and confronted artists with an uncertain and dark future.
By feeding the imagination and countering the sense of reason, it became a cultural movement that sought escape and pleasure through exoticism, mythology, irrationality, melancholy and passion.
