The natural elegance of the peony
Romantic, luminous and velvety: the peony is native to Central and East Asia, where it grows in forests and meadows. It was introduced to Europe at the end of the 18th century and is highly prized by perfumers for the special scent of its flowers. It is a symbol of beauty and love at first sight and is considered the ‘queen of flowers’. Fittingly, Houbigant – known as the perfumer to kings and queens – has dedicated a composition to this beautiful flower.
A word from the perfumer: ‘I love exploring the gardens of the world and browsing through beautiful photo books, one of which particularly moved me. It shows a collection of peonies arranged like a labyrinth on the shores of the Mediterranean, between structure and chaos, community and abandonment. Looking at this picture, I was reminded of the scents that emanated from the landscape. I immediately felt the desire to reproduce the beauty of these flowers in a thousand shades of watercolour, to gather the ingredients to translate the delicacy of the shimmering light that penetrates through each petal, and finally to create a perfume that expresses all the delicate nuances of roses.’ — Céline Ellena
The Eau de Parfum
The bottle dates back to the early 20th century and was originally designed and produced by Baccarat for Houbigant, but has been modernised for this fragrance. The bottle was originally developed for the fragrance ‘Idéal’, which was presented at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris.
