His family has always been involved in perfumes. His grandfather, Serge Heftler, founded Parfums Christian Dior. Frédéric Malle worked for the company for many years before joining the renowned perfume laboratories of Roure Bertrand Dupont in 1986. Thanks to his many years of experience, he not only has extensive knowledge, but also a highly developed sense of smell.
Frédéric Malle has only one rule for the perfumes of his house: eliminate all superfluous embellishments! Each fragrance is designed to envelop the wearer and emphasise their personality.
The development of a fragrance can take Frédéric Malle between six and 18 months. It all starts with an idea, a fragrance sketch that reflects a feeling, a mixture of two or three raw materials that seem like the colours of an abstract painting. The perfumer ventures into the entire spectrum of compositional possibilities, weighing and exploring until the optimal balance is found. The challenge is to find perfection without losing the content and personality of the original idea.
