As a tribute to a nightclub in the immediate vicinity of the first diptyque boutique, the fragrance celebrates the place where the founders sealed their friendship. The club was their living room, their evening meeting place, an office outside their small empire. This is where they invited their allies, where they talked about their latest discoveries and tested their works, where sketches were made and ideas bubbled.
Orphéon is an olfactory dreamscape dominated by cedar, vetiver and patchouli. In four words: fresh, floral, sensual, woody. And, as always, free from any gender roles.
As lovers of diptyque know, it all began exactly sixty years ago in the Latin Quarter, the vibrant heart of Paris' artistic and intellectual nightlife. The post-war period was almost over, the student revolt of May 1968 was still ahead of them: there was a peaceful bustle in the air. Everyone was talking to everyone else, discussing politics and freedom, but also culture and innovation — a meaningful exchange. Philosophers had superstar status (Sartre, Aron, Althusser). Godard, Rohmer and Rivette were revolutionising French cinema. Jazz was everywhere and designers' prêt-à-porter collections were taking over the streets.
These were the years when the founding trio formed. A stroke of genius in many ways. Their friendship became a kind of creative triad of enthusiasm, imagination and desire – six hands put the ideas that sprang inexhaustibly from them into action. Creativity pulsed through their fingers and hearts. ‘Inspired by the desire to create something true,’ Christiane would later describe these impulses. An idea became a sketch, a memory became inspiration, details came together and complemented each other, their talents multiplied. Brotherhood, spontaneity, modernity. A work in progress. The early 1960s were also the great era of cafés: Boulevard Saint-Germain and the surrounding neighbourhood were criss-crossed by such meeting places, which Boris Vian described as ‘archipelagos’. Some only opened when the others closed: the Rose Rouge, the Caveau de la Huchette, the Tabou, the Montana and the Mephisto, where you could meet Albert Camus and Roger Vadim. The Orphéon: half club, half living room, a cult venue on a corner between a shop with two shop windows and the Rue de Pointoise.
Italian sculptor and Parisian by choice Gianpaolo Pagni also designed his drawings for Orphéon in a narrative style: on the front, in the centre of an oval, is a stylised interpretation of the fabric patterns that mark the graphic origins of diptyque. An optical effect of shapes offset against each other and captured in rays of light, mirrored in the only relic of the Orphéon club: a column with stroboscopic facets, which now occupies a central place in the boutique at 34 Boulevard Saint Germain. A touch of party flair from times gone by. On the back, a historic motif makes a comeback: three different overlapping profiles in three shades of grey – symbolising Desmond, Christiane and Yves and their fruitful collaboration, which has made a name for itself all over the world. As always with diptyque – and for 60 years now – Orphéon is a work in three acts: Maison, Parfumeur, Illustrator.
The Orphéon Eau de Parfum combines many notes reminiscent of the interior of a bar: fine wooden furniture, cocktails and cigarette smoke, well-dressed and perfumed guests and ladies wearing make-up. The overall olfactory image of this fragrance evokes a radiant memory of the best and most positive elements of Parisian nightlife in Saint-Germain.

Setting the Imagination free
In Saint Germain, a neighbourhood brimming with the artistic and cultural ebullience of 1960s Paris, a creative adventure was born. Three multitalented aesthetes - Yves Coueslant, Christiane Montadre-Gautrot and Desmond Knox-Leet - were united by their travel-fueled imaginations, their fascination with great civilisations and their shared appreciation of beauty. Together, driven by boundless curiosity and with the freedom to explore it, they founded Diptyque.
Creator of perfumes for the self and the home, scented skincare products and decorative objects, Maison Diptyque tells stories that set the imagination free. Each creation is, in itself, a mini world, a fragrant journey with some familiar paths and others that nourish inspiration and cultivate wonder.
Diptyque extends a poetic invitation to step inside this world of bounty. Here, letters dance. A simple sketch brings an entire lanscape to life. Emerging from the interplay of fragrance and image, it is a place between reverie and reality, between the intimate and the universal. Here, the imagination, liberated, may roam.
Since then, Diptyque has produced numerous sophisticated collections. Fragrances, room fragrances, candles, cosmetics, and accessories in their very own, unmistakable signature. Inspired by nature and travel — the forgotten flavour of a particular fruit, the heaviness of a tree resin, an exotic spice, sweet and delicately scented flowers, the fragrant depths of a balsam and the subtle notes of wood.
