19-69 - American Psycho

“In 1991, Bret Easton Ellis published his iconic novel American Psycho to a storm of controversy. The story revolves around investment banker Patrick Bateman and can be read as social commentary on a society driven by materialism and superficiality. To me, American Psycho is a metaphor for the darker side of the American Dream.

The book significantly impacted pop culture and has over the years developed a cult following and status. In the creation of American Psycho Eau de Parfum I tapped into a few key elements from the book as well as its subsequent film adaptation released in 2000: Bateman’s vanity rituals, fine sparkling water, icy sorbet and Wall Street in the 1980s.”

I ask the guy if his name is Ricardo. He nods. “Sure.” I ask for a gram, tell him Madison sent me. I pull my wallet out and hand over a fifty and two twenties. He asks the Eurotrash chick for her purse. She hands him a velvet bag by Anne Moore. Ricardo reaches in and hands me a tiny, folded envelope. Before I leave, the Eurotrash girl tells me she likes my gazelleskin wallet. I tell her I would like to tit-fuck her and then maybe cut her arms off, but the music, George Michael singing “Faith!” is too loud and she can’t hear me.

Back upstairs I find Patricia where I left her, alone at the bar, nursing a Perrier.

“Listen, Patrick,” she says, her attitude relenting. “I just want you to know that I’m_____”

“A bitch? Listen, do you want some coke?” I shout, cutting her line off. “Uh, yeah… Sure.” She is wildly confused. “Come on.” I yell, taking her hand. She puts her drink down on the bar and follows me through the deserted club, up the stairs toward the rest rooms. There’s really no reason why we couldn’t do it downstairs but that seems tacky and so we do most of it in one of the men’s room stalls. Back outside the men’s room I sit on a couch and smoke some of her cigarettes while she goes downstairs to get us drinks. She comes back apologizing for her behavior earlier this evening. “I mean I loved Barcadia, the food was outstanding, and that mango sorbet, ohmygod I was in heaven. Listen, it’s OK that we didn’t go to Dorsia. We can always go some other night and I know that you probably tried to get us in but it’s just so hot right now. But, oh yeah, I really loved the food at Barcadia. How long has it been open? I think it’s been there three, four months. I read a great review in New York or maybe it was Gourmet…”

A brief history of 19-69

The 19-69 brand was founded by Swedish artist and product developer Johan Bergelin. A two-year creative process involving artists in Scandinavia, France and Italy led to the launch of the perfumes in 2017.

Johan Bergelin: ‘I have always enjoyed surrounding myself with creative people, both friends and business partners. I was always inspired by how these artists stood up for their values. They want to make a difference. There are endless ways to do this: graffiti, sculpture, photography or song lyrics. You may agree with them or not, but it takes courage to stand up for your beliefs and who you are, and I respect that. I think that's what sparked the idea for 19-69 in me.’

Johan Bergelin: ‘The brand name 19-69 makes a clear statement. The year 1969 represents an era of freedom, tolerance and protest. It's also the year I was born and my way of expressing my feelings and saying: This is real. This is me.’ The inspiration encompasses several key moments in the counterculture movement. Art, music and different cultures have also left their mark on the products in terms of content, names and packaging. The different colours symbolise a rainbow, which stood for peace and freedom in 1969.

The fragrances of 19-69

Each of the fragrances was inspired by a different era, culture or setting in Europe, the United States or Asia. All fragrances are designed to be unisex. The glass bottles were lacquered and screen-printed in Italy. Every 19-69 product is handmade, which means that slight variations should be considered part of its character. To launch the fragrance families, 19-69 collaborated with master perfumers Amélie Bourgeois, Anne-Sophie Behaghel and Dario Volpones. All raw materials were carefully considered and selected to ensure the best quality. Each fragrance is based on a fragrance journey.
