Pierre Guillaume - Black Collection - Animal Mondain

The inspiration

The '30s and modernism. From Marlene Dietrich to Robert Mallet-Stevens.

The '30s

Mass culture from the United States sought an antidote to the Great Depression in Hollywood glamour, crooners, swing and Broadway musicals.

Modernism then became widespread throughout society thanks to movements such as Art Deco and Bauhaus, while cinema paid homage to its new icons such as Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich. The latter would influence women around the world by imposing a style that oscillated between supposed androgyny and theatrical glamour in the unreal cloud of their cigarette smoke.

Modernism, architecture and Robert Mallet-Stevens

Inaugurated in 1932, the Villa Cavrois exemplifies the lifestyle associated with modernist architecture: bright, simple and elegant. ‘In the east wing of the villa designed by architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, Paul Cavrois' office, with its natural pear wood furniture, opens onto the smoking room, a small round room with the flair of an ocean liner cabin, featuring a mahogany cigar cabinet and leather benches.’

The warm, woody volutes of tobacco absolutes tinged with hay and honey settle on the scents of mahogany wood, preceded by the fruity-green freshness of pear tree leaves.

The intention

"Between the spicy glow of Cozé and the balsamic and liqueur-like opulence of Liqueur Charnelle, Animal Mondain joins my collection as a new tobacco fragrance. An unisex olfactory creation inspired by the modernist architecture of a Mallet-Stevens smoking room. The laughter of a convivial gathering disperses the tobacco smoke, which gently spreads across the leather armchairs and along the pear wood and mahogany..." – Pierre Guillaume

Mehr über Pierre Guillaume

In 2002, at the age of just 25, Pierre Guillaume created his first composition, called ‘Cozé’. His creations were praised by American perfume critic Chandler Burr (New York Times & GQ USA) as ‘the coolest new European fragrances from a young French chemist’. He also founded his own perfume house, Parfumerie Générale. He increasingly focused on the fascinating interplay of physical factors: the result was the process of photoaffinage or photo-refining, the smoothing of fragrance peaks through UV radiation. His use of unusual ingredients is by no means sensationalism, but rather enriches the resulting fragrance composition. His individual and unique compositional style always led his creations down special paths:

‘Wearing a perfume for oneself is not only a self-centred and moving experience, but also for everyone else, especially the special ‘others’. My perfumes rely on contact with the skin to express themselves. Without it, they would be nothing.’

Pierre Guillaume's perfume art

Pierre Guillaume's studio is an independent perfume house, founded by him and run by his family team. Pierre has never accepted investment offers in order to remain completely independent in his creation and decision-making. The entire development process – from mixing the concentrate to filtering and blending with the carrier alcohol to the final bottling – takes place in the company's own laboratories and production facilities in Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region. The visual signature is entirely his own creation, and the packaging components are also finished in Clermont-Ferrand. Suppliers are selected based on their regional proximity: pumps, bottles, boxes, lids, labels. His ‘Superladies’, as he affectionately calls them, continue to fill and pack each product lovingly by hand.
