Portrait of a Lady is a new type of oriental rose, a baroque perfume. It is based on an accord of benzoin resin, cinnamon, sandalwood and, above all, patchouli, musk and incense. It opens with an excessive dose of the finest Turkish rose essence, which Dominique Ropion combines with red berries and a spicy accord with the rest of the formula. Hundreds of attempts were needed to balance such an excessive formula (Portrait of a Lady is undoubtedly the perfume with the highest rose essence and patchouli content in the heart note), resulting in a rare symphonic perfume: a new oriental rose, a sensual beauty that attracts people like a magnet. Frédéric Malle likes to describe himself as a publisher and editor, as he sees his company more as a publishing house. It offers creative minds the opportunity to express their artistic inclinations without restriction. At Editions de Parfums, perfumers find a rare opportunity to realise their full potential. His family has always been involved in perfumes. His grandfather, Serge Heftler, founded Parfums Christian Dior. Frédéric Malle worked for the company for many years before joining the renowned perfume laboratories of Roure Bertrand Dupont in 1986. Thanks to his many years of experience, he not only has extensive knowledge, but also a highly developed sense of smell.


Frédéric Malle has only one rule for the perfumes of his house: eliminate all superfluous embellishments! Each fragrance is designed to envelop the wearer and emphasise their personality.


The development of a fragrance can take Frédéric Malle between six and 18 months. It all starts with an idea, a fragrance sketch that reflects a feeling, a mixture of two or three raw materials that seem like the colours of an abstract painting. The perfumer ventures into the entire spectrum of compositional possibilities, weighing and exploring until the optimal balance is found. The challenge is to find perfection without losing the content and personality of the original idea.
