19-69 - San Pedro

“During the years I have always found the beauty of Joshua Tree National Park and Twentynine Palms mind-blowing. The surreal features of succulents, all sculpted by storms, strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Bristle cactus plants that in contrast produce the most delicate and soft flowers. With many of them being psychoactive, the fragrance is also a testimonial to Laurel Canyon: the home of countless parties and LA rock musicians during the experimental era of the late 1960s and 1970s.”

Catherine liked high places. High up on the hills. The yurt was located in Laurel Canyon. It was a circular tent and covered in beige felt. Having harvested cacti the previous day at her friend’s land, close to Joshua National Park, the preparation was now in full swing. First the spines were removed using the tip of a small knife. Then the translucent skin was peeled off to make the wet, dark green flesh appear. The holy grail. Hours later the brew stood ready in a cauldron of cast iron. The small gathering of friends sat in a small circle on large embroidered cushions and pillows while the leader of the ceremony poured the liquid in tea bowls.

And to listen to the wind blow. The brew was like drinking bitter earth. And then. Everything moving, the colors so vivid. A magical and enchanted land, so intense. She went out and laid down on the ground. One moment Catherine felt she had enough, and the next moment she surrendered. Wind chimes of bamboo created a subtle, soothing noise together with the leaves from the surrounding trees. The bonfire crackled and she gazed at the clear sky of planets, stars, asteroids and comets.

The beauty of the desert all came back to her. Joshua Trees reaching up towards the sky in prayer. The dusty, earthy aroma and the sweetness of rain. Untouched nature sculptured by relentless sun and strong winds. It all now started to make sense and have a meaning.

A brief history of 19-69

The 19-69 brand was founded by Swedish artist and product developer Johan Bergelin. A two-year creative process involving artists in Scandinavia, France and Italy led to the launch of the perfumes in 2017.

Johan Bergelin: ‘I have always enjoyed surrounding myself with creative people, both friends and business partners. I was always inspired by how these artists stood up for their values. They want to make a difference. There are endless ways to do this: graffiti, sculpture, photography or song lyrics. You may agree with them or not, but it takes courage to stand up for your beliefs and who you are, and I respect that. I think that's what sparked the idea for 19-69 in me.’

Johan Bergelin: ‘The brand name 19-69 makes a clear statement. The year 1969 represents an era of freedom, tolerance and protest. It's also the year I was born and my way of expressing my feelings and saying: This is real. This is me.’ The inspiration encompasses several key moments in the counterculture movement. Art, music and different cultures have also left their mark on the products in terms of content, names and packaging. The different colours symbolise a rainbow, which stood for peace and freedom in 1969.

The fragrances of 19-69

Each of the fragrances was inspired by a different era, culture or setting in Europe, the United States or Asia. All fragrances are designed to be unisex. The glass bottles were lacquered and screen-printed in Italy. Every 19-69 product is handmade, which means that slight variations should be considered part of its character. To launch the fragrance families, 19-69 collaborated with master perfumers Amélie Bourgeois, Anne-Sophie Behaghel and Dario Volpones. All raw materials were carefully considered and selected to ensure the best quality. Each fragrance is based on a fragrance journey.
