Cape Heartache is the only American contribution to Philip Sava's particularly popular series of adventure novels. The scent is loosely based on an expedition he undertook to the Pacific Northwest as a teenager in 1881 and is considered the most authentic of his works. It revolves around a homestead he built in a coastal grove of old trees. The novel describes his love for a young woman, a member of the Nahelem Indian tribe. Its theme of leaving the familiar behind to find comfort and courage in another place still resonates today.
