The capital of the Vardhana dynasty, Kannauj, known for its valuable aromatic substances, became a trading centre in the 7th century. Its success did not go unnoticed by Emperor Harshavardhana, who introduced a tax on vetiver. While many remained silent, a group of perfumers believed that the new tax would be used to finance violence against innocent people and staged an uprising. Under cover of night, the rebels covered the city with fragrant oils. After being overcome by the fragrant powers of Kannauj, the tax was abolished.
