For the incense fragrance "Avignon", Bertrand Duchaufour was commissioned by Ms. Kawakubo to create a fragrance inspired by the eponymous southern French town whose Pont St. Benezet Bridge was made famous by a popular French folk song.
Avignon also has a picturesque and historic old town, a medieval city wall with several towers and city gates and the famous Papal Palace. From the beginning of the 14th Century to the mid 15th Century, the Papal Palace served as a residence for a total of seven popes and five anti-popes and along with the Cathedral of Avignon and the Pont St. Benezet is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries a long and strong Catholic presence the number of religious buildings in Avignon is enormous, little wonder that Mr. Duchaufour chose this city for the inspirational source of the incense fragrance Avignon.
In the opening Roman chamomile provides fresh sweetness and an herbal-like aroma that immediately combines with warm spicy labdanum, whose woody-balsamic notes correspond perfectly with the heart note of frankincense. Resinous undertones with a subtle citrus character join the composition. In the base balsamic-woody and soft-sensual notes of palisander, vanilla and patchouly combine in which the latter gives the fragrance a certain earthiness.
A very relaxed, meditative and long-lasting incense fragrance which carries significant ecclesiastical echoes in itself which duly pay homage to the ancient papal city of Avignon.
