19-69 - Atlantico
Nic von Rupp: “It was the 1990s and I recall driving in an old school Mercedes with my dad while listening to cassette tapes. He was playing The Beach Boys at the time and I clearly remember embracing the whole vibe, the warm feeling it gave me. ‘What’s surfing, it sounds really cool?’‚ I asked. ‘Surfing is when you ride waves’ my father told me. I must have been about four years old at that time and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to surf.
Fast-forward a couple of years, and we have moved to the coast of Portugal and that’s when I first tried board riding. It was an instant love and passion. The whole energy, the community and the setting.
Surfing, whether big or small waves, makes you connect with nature on such a deep level, it’s almost spiritual. You are moving with the force of the elements that has travelled for thousands of miles far out at sea. Then, when it reaches the shoreline, it breaks into a massive wave — and the more immense the waves, the more irresistible it becomes. I call waves ‘the children of a storm’.
Just as with all the places you might visit around the world during your life, Nazaré has a characteristic scent that lingers in your memory. It’s a raw landscape there with the rock formations, the mix of the air, the wind and the wild seascape of the Atlantic Ocean breaking. It’s incredible.”
The Fragrance Journey is based on a conversation with Nic von Rupp, who is renowned for pushing boundaries of what is considered possible in big wave surfing.

A brief history of 19-69
The 19-69 brand was founded by Swedish artist and product developer Johan Bergelin. A two-year creative process involving artists in Scandinavia, France and Italy led to the launch of the perfumes in 2017.
Johan Bergelin: ‘I have always enjoyed surrounding myself with creative people, both friends and business partners. I was always inspired by how these artists stood up for their values. They want to make a difference. There are endless ways to do this: graffiti, sculpture, photography or song lyrics. You may agree with them or not, but it takes courage to stand up for your beliefs and who you are, and I respect that. I think that's what sparked the idea for 19-69 in me.’
Johan Bergelin: ‘The brand name 19-69 makes a clear statement. The year 1969 represents an era of freedom, tolerance and protest. It's also the year I was born and my way of expressing my feelings and saying: This is real. This is me.’ The inspiration encompasses several key moments in the counterculture movement. Art, music and different cultures have also left their mark on the products in terms of content, names and packaging. The different colours symbolise a rainbow, which stood for peace and freedom in 1969.
The fragrances of 19-69
Each of the fragrances was inspired by a different era, culture or setting in Europe, the United States or Asia. All fragrances are designed to be unisex. The glass bottles were lacquered and screen-printed in Italy. Every 19-69 product is handmade, which means that slight variations should be considered part of its character. To launch the fragrance families, 19-69 collaborated with master perfumers Amélie Bourgeois, Anne-Sophie Behaghel and Dario Volpones. All raw materials were carefully considered and selected to ensure the best quality. Each fragrance is based on a fragrance journey.
