1980: Gwen K. Vroomen quit her monotonous job, went to the corner pub and, at the bartender's urging, threw a dart at the world map on the wall. She had never heard of Goa, but knew immediately that she had to go. Three months later, she celebrated the Hindu New Year in a tea garden high in the hills of Kerala, fireworks exploding beneath her. She wrote about that night: ‘I was revived by colour, redeemed by the vibrant unknown.’ Her self-proclaimed ‘journey out of darkness’ was peppered with unforgettable stories of night markets, river trips and gruesome moped rides, inspired by a generation of young Americans rebelling against the drudgery of ordinary life.
