A symphony of the finest speckles of polished woods meanders through a soft, plump perfume. Palissandre d'Or has always enriched the palette of precious wood notes with another dimension – with a smouldering blend that evokes associations with sunburnt Sienna red, red lacquer and melted gold.
The inspiration for this came from a rosewood tree, known by its botanical name Dalbergia sissoo. Historically, this is the original rosewood species of northern India. Another rosewood species, palisander, which thrives in sparse Asian forests and is used for artistic carvings, lent itself to the further development of the fragrance idea.
Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl, the founders of Aedes de Venustas, entrusted this to master perfumer Alberto Morillas. ‘I don't create overly figurative fragrances,’ says Morillas. ‘Each of my perfumes is a melody.’ Palissandre d'Or embodies the quintessence of his style, which he characterises in three words: ‘Fluidity, transparency and expressiveness.’ These qualities are reflected in the Eau de Parfum he composed in 2015, with its soft glow, warm wood notes and silky, flattering flair. It is as abstract as it is impressive.
The scent formula resembles an inlay. Crystal-clear ambrette, natural musk, rose, pear and iris notes are the bright pieces of the puzzle alongside cool spice notes such as pink pepper, coriander and nutmeg. Warm cinnamon aspects pave the way for the olfactory secret of the formula: rare sandalwood extract from Sri Lanka. It has a subtle smoky scent, a hint of rose and a creamy effect. The warmth of copa balm and silky patchouli extract make the eau de toilette even more delicious. A hint of ambrox, which smells of warm bark and sun-kissed skin, unfolds its beguiling effect wherever Palissandre d'Or is sprayed.
A trio of cedarwoods gives the radiant blend structure and body. Clear, invigorating Virginia cedarwood provides energy, the Chinese variety, which smells of Lapsang Souchong tea, adds sophistication, and Alaska cedar adds a smoky hint of Russian leather. ‘In terms of its colour and density, with its austere signature and very special, daring ingredients, it is a monochrome eau de parfum,’ says Morillas. ’But it is nevertheless extremely wearable and full of facets that can unfold in a very special way on every skin.’
Palissandre d'Or is a relaxed journey to the olfactory essence of mystical woods.
