Esprit du Tigre by Heeley is a fragrant big cat of a very special kind, which only at first glance is reminiscent of Tiger Balm.

In the tiger's head, we find strong and green, almost eucalyptus-like notes of camphor and peppermint. The bold cat heart proves to be a spicy combination of light cardamom, hot cloves and aromatic black pepper. At the base, on the clawed paws, we detect grassy, root-like, smoky vetiver notes and a sharp hint of cinnamon.

James Heeley was born in Yorkshire, England, but now lives and works in Paris. Where else would he be, given that he creates fragrances in addition to product, packaging and graphic designs, interior concepts and objects? And this despite the fact that he actually studied philosophy and aesthetics at King's College, University of London. At second glance, however, philosophy and aesthetics, as well as design and perfumes, have more in common than one might think – James Heeley is not the only philosopher in the fragrance industry, considering that Lorenzo Villoresi also studied philosophy, as did the ubiquitous Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, who also works with fragrances and design.


The range of James Heeley's work is vast, and he always pays close attention to detail: simplicity and elegance are the result of his work, in which he combines form and function(ality) with particular attention to the materials used. This also applies to his fragrances, of course. Created in the heart of France, they all characterise James Heeley's special understanding of luxury: a connection to life and intelligence, expressed in clear forms – and fragrances. Dieser Duft ist leicht beschrieben: Er riecht nach Tiger Balm. Und zwar so präzise wie es nur sein kann.

Und obwohl es "lediglich" eine Rekonstruktion eines Duftes ist, mit dem der ein oder andere sicherlich schon konfrontiert wurde, findet man in Esprit Du Tigre dennoch einen wunderschönen Kalt-Warm-Kontrast. Kalt wegen der Pfefferminze, des Camphers und Menthols (wenn auch nicht aufgeführt) und Wärme wegen des Zimts und der anderen Gewürze.

Alle "Zutaten", die Tiger Balm auszeichnen (man kann das auf Wikipedia nachlesen) sind in Esprit du Tigre alle präsent und perfekt plaziert.

Es gibt zwar viele Leute, die den Geruch von Tiger Balm nicht mögen, doch ich mag ihn sehr, denn der Duft bedeutet, dass Schmerzen bald nachlassen werden (denn Tiger Balm macht bekanntlich Atemwege frei und kann Kopf- und Gliederschmerzen lindern).
Und dieses Gefühl von nachlassendem Schmerz als Parfum umzusetzen ist brilliant.
