Pierre Guillaume - Église de Velours No. 20.2

A vibrato of wild silk, a vapour of incense, myrrh, a velvet of musks. Église de Velours is a caress of incense. Olibanum resin, meditative and mystical, is diverted from its purely atmospheric nature: it becomes epidermal, carnal and velvety. True to the Pierre Guillaume style, Église de Velours is the subject of a silent conversation between soul and skin.

Paris, July 1997, the final preparations for a haute couture show. Velvet Napoleon III chairs, rolls of precious fabrics lining the walls, wisps of cigarette smoke float in the air. A familiar voice, slow and fragile, breaks the monastic silence that reigns in this place. A model with the face of a Madonna emerges from a room accompanied by two seamstresses helping her with the ruffles of a dress under construction. Barely concealed by a transparent black silk blouse, her breasts vibrate to the rhythm of her hurried steps. There’s something divine about this temple of beauty: the solemnity, the meditation, the fervour of the “Atelier faithful” around the Creator-Demiurge. Doubt and then the miracle: inspiration and the advent of creation. To enter here, is like to enter a church… of velvet (Église de Velours).

Mehr über Pierre Guillaume

In 2002, at the age of just 25, Pierre Guillaume created his first composition, called ‘Cozé’. His creations were praised by American perfume critic Chandler Burr (New York Times & GQ USA) as ‘the coolest new European fragrances from a young French chemist’. He also founded his own perfume house, Parfumerie Générale. He increasingly focused on the fascinating interplay of physical factors: the result was the process of photoaffinage or photo-refining, the smoothing of fragrance peaks through UV radiation. His use of unusual ingredients is by no means sensationalism, but rather enriches the resulting fragrance composition. His individual and unique compositional style always led his creations down special paths:

‘Wearing a perfume for oneself is not only a self-centred and moving experience, but also for everyone else, especially the special ‘others’. My perfumes rely on contact with the skin to express themselves. Without it, they would be nothing.’

Pierre Guillaume's perfume art

Pierre Guillaume's studio is an independent perfume house, founded by him and run by his family team. Pierre has never accepted investment offers in order to remain completely independent in his creation and decision-making. The entire development process – from mixing the concentrate to filtering and blending with the carrier alcohol to the final bottling – takes place in the company's own laboratories and production facilities in Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region. The visual signature is entirely his own creation, and the packaging components are also finished in Clermont-Ferrand. Suppliers are selected based on their regional proximity: pumps, bottles, boxes, lids, labels. His ‘Superladies’, as he affectionately calls them, continue to fill and pack each product lovingly by hand.
