Mono No Aware is a key concept in Japanese culture and loosely translates as the appreciation of things/objects based on the knowledge of their transience. I first came across the term Mono No Aware in Sally Mann's autobiography. The term immediately appealed to me because, for as long as I can remember, I have had this feeling of happiness and sadness when I realise that all things are temporary, yet at the same time feel such awe that I was able to experience them. It is the constantly repeating cycle of holding on and letting go. On a philosophical level, I have never been able to relate to concepts such as memento mori or vanitas. For me, denying the material world is not synonymous with enlightenment or liberation, but rather with fear, which I associate with insensitivity, indifference and apathy. So I was overjoyed when I discovered Mono No Aware, finally a term that felt natural to me. Yes, loss makes us sad, but isn't it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, et voilà! And on the level of a perfume, the experience of Mono No Aware is inherent: the moment you spray it, it begins to disappear, and that is part of the beauty of a perfume. This perfume is an ode to that feeling and to the culture that gave us this term.
