Tom Ford was born in Austin, Texas, and grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Today, he is one of the most renowned and successful designers in the world.
In his youth, Ford moved to New York, where he began studying art history at New York University. However, he dropped out after a short time to study architecture at the Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris.
In 1990, Tom Ford moved to Milan, where he was hired by Gucci as a designer for women's clothing. After only two years, he was promoted to design director and, two years later, to creative director of the Gucci brand. In this position, he was responsible for the design of all products, from fashion to fragrances and store designs.
He gave the legendary fashion house a completely new image. His visionary eye for customer needs brought the company the greatest success in its history. Ford's innovative and provocative designs revolutionised the world of luxury and took it in a whole new direction.
He later took over the creative direction of another legendary brand in the Gucci Group: Yves Saint Laurent. Tom Ford revitalised the brand by infusing it with his signature, inimitable aura of mystery – and adding a healthy dose of sensuality.
In April 2005, a year after leaving the Gucci Group, Ford founded his own brand: Tom Ford. His first strategic move was to form an alliance with Estée Lauder to bring luxurious moments of perfumery and fashion to the world.
