Mendittorosa - Odori d'Anima Collection - Albatros

Versi is an olfactory study in three chapters. Versi explores and enjoys the wonderful correspondences between perfume and poetry. The third and last of the three studies is Albatros Eau de Parfum inspired by the poem of the same name by Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867). The poem was published in the collection Les Fleurs du mal. It is indeed the second poem of the collection (first edition: 1857). It is found in the first of the books six sections, which has the title: Spleen et Idéal.

The Concept
When you talk about Poetry, you must include the Poets. The Poet is the one, who does. The individual to become Poet. The symbol of all humanity. The poet is a person using the human wings literally speaking. The wings open our sensitivity. Unfortunately, we often forget both our wings and our sensitivity. Remember that it is the sensitivity that makes us fly high, but also the wings that can make us stumble, so we will be laughed at. No one has ever described such ambivalence better than Charles Baudelaire in his poem Albatros. We are all Albatros. We can soar majestically in the air of life and awkwardly stumble upon our own wings. We arouse admiration but also derision. Because some people have forgotten their Albatros.

The Poem

The Albatross (translation by Eli Siegel)

Often, to amuse themselves the men of the crew
Lay hold of the albatross, vast birds of the seas—
Who follow, sluggish companions of the voyage,
The ship gliding on the bitter gulfs.

Hardly have they placed them on the planks,
Than these kings of the azure, clumsy and shameful,
Let, piteously, their great wings in white,
Like oars, drag at their sides.

This winged traveler, how he is awkward and weak!
He, lately so handsome, how comic he is and uncomely!
Someone bothers his beak with a short pipe,
Another imitates, limping, the ill thing that flew!

The poet resembles the prince of the clouds
Who is friendly to the tempest and laughs at the bowman;
Banished to ground in the midst of hootings,
His wings, those of a giant, hinder him from walking.

The Perfume
It is a wind of freedom, without fear, hesitation, and shame. A cerulean horizon that welcomes those, who want to open their wings.

Mehr über Mendittorosa

Born from the catharsis of lava, the ‘Odori d'Anima’ were created in 2011 at the foot of the Sicilian volcano Stromboli, which has charged the surrounding area with emotion and energy since time immemorial. It was on this island, one of the southernmost points of the Mediterranean, that Stefanie Squeglia discovered her true calling in the form of a memory that had seemed forgotten until then:

As a young girl in Naples, she took her grandmother's preserving jars, which were usually used to store homemade tomato sauce, and filled them with rose petals and oils she had collected. She would then hide them in a dark room to rediscover them later. Broken out. Transformed.

With a passion as energetic as the Stromboli itself, she created her first fragrance trilogy as an offering to the island's muse.

Today, Mendittorosa's uncompromising products bear witness to the deep and wild heat of her heart's inspiration, as well as her appreciation of the incomparable craftsmanship of her native Italy.

The Mendittorosa philosophy

Passions, not perfumes. Designed for individuals, not for everyone. These fragrances are for people who make a room vibrate. Driven by wanderlust, they are always searching for their opposite and use their passion and instinct to follow their own path.

Custom-made packaging from Italian craftsmanship. From cutting the fabric to making buttonholes, tailoring has a colourful tradition in Stefania's native Naples, where it can take up to 100 hours of handwork to make the finest suits in the world. She was inspired by the impeccable craftsmanship she grew up with. Her products are therefore exclusively handmade in Italy. The result is extraordinary objects with a sculptural appeal and a character all their own that are sure to delight.

Italian artists shaped the metal caps, metal tags and all other metal details to accurately reflect the country, symbols and ideas behind Mendittorosa.

The fragrance boxes are perfect replicas of the birch wood cases used to ship art objects around the world, rounded off with two-tone metal engravings, a round closure system and a bolero lacing made of twine and metal.

About the founder

Born in Naples, Italy, Stefania Squeglia had already explored many forms of creative expression before discovering her true calling as a creator of artistic perfumes and fragrance memories for Mendittorosa. She came from the world of film and fashion marketing and event production, but despite her creative successes, she felt restless inside and her dreams were aimless. And then came the catharsis: the opportunity to visit the Stromboli volcano brought a hidden memory to the surface and revealed her life's work – and so her first collection, ‘Odori d'Anima’, was born.
