Bal d'Afrique
The Paris of the late 1920s, with its affinity for African art and culture and its enthusiasm for its music and dance, was the inspiration for this vetiver-based fragrance. Ben Gorham wanted to create a warm and romantic interpretation of vetiver, a blend of Parisian avant-gardism and African culture. A fragrance that is dynamic and unique in its expression and statement, reflecting the euphoric and excessive lifestyle of the time in all its intensity.
Bal d'Afrique is an unusual and atypical vetiver fragrance. Citrusy and exotic in the top notes, the fragrance develops an extremely pleasant and flattering heart that already extends into the base: an airy aromatic spice, impossible to pin down, in harmony with floral notes carried by a slightly woody and amber warmth and accompanied by a subtle smoky, sweet vetiver. More aura than perfume, Bal d'Afrique masterfully bridges the gap between unknown, exotic promise and pleasant familiarity.
The formula
The formula contains a high percentage of shea butter (20%). Shea butter comes from the shea nut tree, better known as the karité tree or African butter tree, which grows in West Africa. Shea butter is traded there or used for medicinal purposes, but also for beauty care.

Shea butter restores the skin's moisture content with all the essential ingredients it needs for balance, elasticity and complexion. The formula contains a blend of moisturisers that have been tested for long-lasting hydration (a combination of glycol and xylitol). The nourishing properties of shea butter are supported by the moisturising power of natural sugar, xylitol. The sugar attracts water molecules, allowing the skin to absorb and retain moisture.
